Low-fat Diets are Making People Fat

Avena Originals Articles

Low Fat Diets

Hold the pasta. Bring on the nuts, the scrambled eggs. Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of the Nutrition Department at the Harvard School of Public Health, says the much-touted, low fat, high carbohydrate diet is making you fat.

His controversial findings were presented to the 16th International Congress of Nutrition, which opened in Montreal drawing 3000 nutrition experts from around the world. They spent a week looking at everything from herbal medicine to genetically modified foods. Why is it, he asks, that North Americans are growing fatter at an alarming rate while food shelves are groaning with low-fat products and fat intake has been going down?

His research led to a nagging suspicion: Low-fat diets might be making people fat. People have been forsaking good fats in favour of rice & pasta in the mistaken belief that as long as they‘re eating carbo’s, they won’t add inches to their waistline, Willett said. While everyone worries about saturated fat, which is found in meat and dairy products, he said there is a much worse culprit lurking on supermarket shelves: transfatty acids. You won’t see those words on food labels as they are sugarcoated with names like hydrogenated oils and shortening.

Is Our Bowel Our Lifeline?

Bowel Toxemia—yuck! Health problems linked to an unhealthy colon? Does immunity boost really start in the colon? Do you want to help take years off your face and put a spring back into your step? Good health is based on an understanding of what truly causes the many health problems plaguing us today. Our digestive system is the first line of defense against illness, and yet the most often ignored—until there is a problem. Using a very effective bowel cleanse and support daily–Avena's Herb Cocktail–is crucial.

The human suffering and the social, medical, and economic costs of gastro-intestinal diseases and disorders represent a huge share of our annual health care expenditure and loss in productivity. Up to 100 million North Americans suffer from intermittent forms of digestive or alimentary canal diseases with the estimated total cost in lost work, lost wages, and medical costs at over $50 billion per year. It is estimated that some 200,000 workers miss work every day due to digestive problems—more than any other group of disorders!

The annual sales of prescription and over-the-counter drug products used for digestive diseases are approximately $2 - 2.5 billion per year, and have been growing at a steady 10% rate over the last decade. The following breakdown, a "barometer" of sorts, adequately demonstrates the fact that these problems are a significant public health problem, contributing substantially to overall health care costs.

Laxatives $850 - 900 million Antidiarrheals $100 million

Antihemorrhoidals $250 million Antacids $1 billion

The number one immunological organ in your body is your colon. It contributes to good health, vitality, and longevity. When toxic wastes are allowed to accumulate, they will contribute strongly to poor health, low energy, and serious health problems--which then start a whole host of other health problems. Cancer of the colon and rectum (Colorectal Cancer) is the second most common form of cancer overall in the United States (exceeded only by lung cancer). This year alone, there will be approximately 150,000 new cases and approximately 60,000 related deaths. Perhaps as many as one in every 10 of today's Americans will die of this disease.

Other obvious health problems directly related to the colon include:

- appendicitis (it is estimated that more than 300,000 appendixes are removed each year)

- diverticular disease (Diverticulitis/Diverticulosis-reported to be present in more than one-third of those over 40, and in up to two-thirds of those who are over 80 years of age)

- hemorrhoids (believed to be present to some degree in nearly half of those over 45 years of age)

- benign tumors (reported to be present in 1/3 of all autopsies done on patients over the age of 20)

- bloating

- gas

- fatigue

- bad breath

- diarrhea

- heartburn

- indigestion

- body odor

- headaches

- depression

- abnormal bleeding

- coated tongue

- acid reflux

- mental dullness

- aches, pains

- constipation

- low energy levels

- weight problems

Less obvious results of accumulated toxic waste in your colon are tumours, cysts, polyps, fibroids, and high cholesterol. As your eating habits worsen, so does your elimination efficiency. If you are eating 2 to 3 normal size meals, you should have 2 or 3 bowel movements a day. Additionally, a normal bowel movement should be over ½ the width of your wrist; from your elbow to your wrist in length (we are all built in proportion to that); and, because everything in it has been properly digested, it should float; it should not soil the tissue paper; it should be easy to pass; be a medium brown colour (no old dark material); it should not have a foul smell; and you should not have smelly gas. Now there's a goal! Ignoring any warning signs is costly!
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's disease, and that's not all…

Many, if not most, of the list of disorders mentioned are characteristic of modern Western civilization. Available evidence suggests that most, if not all of these disorders were rare or uncommon in the Western world less than one hundred years ago and that the prevalence of each has greatly increased during the last 50 years. Researchers (such as Cleave, Trowell, Burkitt, and others) have known these diseases are almost unheard of in the communities that still adhere to their traditional way of life. In developing countries in Asia and Africa, for example, documented evidence has proven the rarity of diseases such as diverticular disease, appendicitis, bowel cancer, adenomatous polyps (multiple glandular tissue overgrowths), ulcerative colitis, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (clots), pulmonary embolism, hemorrhoids, and hiatus hernia, appendicitis, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, gallstones, varicose veins, venous thrombosis, and hemorrhoids.

But as these countries develop and begin to adopt Western customs, a rise in the frequency of these disorders follows almost just as surely as night follows day. They first appear, and then become common, in the upper socioeconomic groups and in the more urbanized communities (which are, of course, the first groups to become “Westernized"). For example, this has been the case in Africa and then in Japan since World War II, particularly in the urban communities. As a result of years of investigations, the evidence supports not an environmental factor, but what the researchers say is the "F-Hypothesis" (‘F' for fibre).

After a 25-year study of over 5,000 cases, the New York People's Hospital stated that “every physician should realize the intestinal toxemia is the most important primary and contributing causes of many disorders and diseases of the human body” and that “one must note that such toxemia is at the root of more problems than commonly imagined or suspected”.

In the past it was thought the large intestine was not really involved in absorption (the principal absorptive functions being to conserve water and electrolytes secreted into the gut during digestion). However, recent research has demonstrated that the colon does also participate in protein absorption, among other things.
Toxic Megacolon

his is extremely significant as the colon is the major exposure site most of the endogenous bacterial proteins, enterotoxins, and the breakdown-antigens, which may be involved in the origination and development of a number of diseases—including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, food allergies and allergic gastoenteropathy, bacterial enteritis (from toxins produced by Escherichia coli, Shigella, or Vibro cholerae, etc.), and certain extra-intestinal immune-complex diseases.

Immune disorders, resulting from the interaction of circulating antibodies with absorbed antigenic protein (particularly those bad bacterial breakdown-antigens originating in the colon), have been implicated in the development of even some forms of chronic active hepatitis, glomerulonephritis (a kidney problem), myocarditi (inflammation of heart muscle), and also the arthritis that is associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. Even a role in the origins of celiac disease and of collagen-vascular diseases (such as systemic lupus

erythematosis) has been suggested. As research continues, the bowel-toxemia ‘you-need-to-keep-the-sewer-pipes-open' school will be completely vindicated as correct.

As we live, we pour a lot of toxins down our gullets and our bodies do not always handle them well so they accumulate. Unfriendly microbes, non-utilized foods, toxic metals and chemicals, and carcinogenic agents can get gummed up inside our digestive tracts and begin to cause problems. Of course if we smoke or use alcohol, we are accumulating considerably more toxins.

Enzymes create the necessary digestion and with Friendly Flora probiotics help protect the bowels and absorb the nutrients. Without digestion you create the one and only real basic disease—Intestinal Toxemia. Generally intestinal toxemia manifests itself as one of even more symptoms than those already listed: nervousness, endocrine disturbances, neuro-circulatory abnormalities, arthritis, sciatica and low back pain, allergy, asthma, eye, ear, nose and throat disease, cardiac irregularities, pressure on the prostate, and pathological changes in the breasts, mental sluggishness, loss of concentration, irritability, exaggerated introspection, obsessions, excessive worry, and more! Without the breakdown of food—which actually starts with your saliva, then in the stomach and duodenum, the breakdown of health begins.

When your digestive tract is not functioning properly, your body has to make room to accommodate that growing pile of putrefied waste, which can harden and cause your colon to significantly expand in size to become what is referred to as a ‘mega-colon' and even put pressure on other organs (e.g. prostrate gland).

Will I feel worse or better while detoxing the ‘garbage' out of my system??

Some Possible Detoxification Symptoms:
Clogged sinus

Lack of energy
Fever / Flu symptoms

Gas / Bloating / Diarrhea
Dull headache

High blood pressure

Mental fog

Skin rash

Water retention
Excessive sweating

Changing your diet may result in misunderstanding as to what is going on in your body; because sometimes the symptoms are similar to those felt in other health issues. To help in understanding, let's look at playing softball with your kids. If you have not been getting regular exercise, the day after this activity you might not feel so good—tired, sore muscles, stiffness, etc. This is your body reacting to something it is not used to doing. You may also see this same thing when stopping a regular activity—such as if you are a soda pop drinker and stop, you may notice you have less energy or even a headache—your body is reacting to your decision to change .

In the same way, when we make a change in our diet by stopping a bad habit or by eating better, our cells begin releasing the stored toxic substances into the blood stream which are then carried through the circulation system to be eliminated through bowel movements, the kidneys and bladder or through the skin. Often those with impaired liver or kidney function will find their skin, the largest elimination organ, releasing toxins through sweating and may even break out in a rash in their body's attempt to get rid of toxins quickly. Of course,

exercise will help detoxify by stimulating the lymphatic fluid movement, with the accompanying deeper breathing that helps eliminate toxins and enhance the immune system. You may also find that once the toxins are diminished or gone, you absorb substances more easily. Thus sugar or caffeine, etc. might really set you off considerably more than before you started your positive changes. You may also find that the symptoms come in repeat cycles, feeling great, then detoxing symptoms, feeling great and then detoxing symptoms, as the body “goes deeper” to find more toxins to eliminate. Realize that your body is simply cleaning and correcting itself naturally. This is commonly referred to as a ‘healing crisis'. If you find this too symptomatic, you may increase your Herb Cocktail to go through the process faster, or you may decrease it to have lesser symptoms, which stretches out the detox period, but it may make the detoxification process more comfortable.

Obviously, the best thing to do is to commit yourself to a change in your diet by decreasing or eliminating refined flours, cooked carbohydrates, sugars, processed foods, items with partially hydrogenated oils, and fried foods, etc. In contrast, help your whole system by increasing the amount of good water you drink, increasing raw vegetables and fruits in your regime by making delicious salads, raw soups, etc, and also by consistent good exercise.

Be consistent in taking your Herb Cocktail powder or capsules twice daily. Herb Cocktail is one of the most effective support and cleansing products available because it honours the electrical formula of each plant used—it contains various sources of dietary fibre, a special combination of herbs, and it is Electrically Available รข for the electricity of your body to recognize as food. Formulation is everything–and it is important to have a variety of dietary fibres, since different types of fibre add different benefits to the bowel. Herb Cocktail is non-habit forming, and the primary action is not the normal ‘hydraulic effect' of other cleansers. It is one of the most effective support and cleansing products available today. The various special herbs and herbal combinations used by Avena Originals are efficient, desirable, and recognized by Master Herbalists to be extremely beneficial in dealing with a wide range of gastro-intestinal problems—and have been used in this way for hundreds of years.

Bowel problems do not happen overnight, so do allow time for your body to correct its situation. T herefore, prevention must be a sustained, consistent, effort over the course of your lifetime. In other words, you need to begin making the necessary changes now, and continue with them for the rest of your life. Your body always goes for quality, so when food coming in is of higher quality for building than the present cells had, the body will discard the present cells to make room for those created by the higher-quality food. It is suggested that when you fill your plate at mealtime, 80% of the food on it be raw and the other 20% may be cooked (such as protein). The key here is to keep it simple—but also have fun!

We hope this has highlighted the importance of cleansing the body – Start with paying attention to what you are eating, ensure that it is digested (Avena's N-Zymes), and that you are drinking plenty of good water. Be sure you include Avena's Herb Cocktail twice daily on an empty stomach with good juice or good water if necessary.

Remember that old familiar saying—‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'? There is no doubt in our mind that if we are consistent in providing our bodies the ability to cleanse daily and at the same time giving the bowels healthy support, we will see a rapid increase in the quality of our health, and a steady decline in the kinds and types of dis-eases and dis-orders that unnecessarily afflict our bodies in today's toxic world.

Individual Enzymes

Individual Cultured Enzymes

ENZYMES—the Key to Life! Every living thing depends on enzymes. Enzymes are especially valuable in producing the energy required to run our bodies, and are essential for digestion. They help our bodies break down the foods we eat so that the nutrients can be utilized. When we have eaten cooked or processed food (which destroys most enzymes) our bodies actually sacrifice their own metabolic enzymes to digest that food. Our bodies contain a limited amount of “enzyme potential”– our ‘enzyme bank’ for metabolic ability, which has to last us a lifetime. To maintain our optimumenzyme potential for metabolism etc., we really only have two choices when it comes to digestion:
- Eat only foods high in natural enzymes, such as fresh raw fruits, vegetables, nut, seeds and berries, or
- Use supplemental plant-based enzymes to offset those lost in cooking or processing.

Avena’s N-Zymes are plant-based, multiple, full-spectrum, high-potency, high activity level cultured Enzymes active in a wide pH-range. Designed to assist the body in the assimilation and utilization of food nutrients, they should be taken with meals to replace the naturally-occurring enzymes lost during cooking and processing. They perform many different jobs including biological reactions in the body, without themselves being changed or destroyed. Unlike vitamins and minerals, enzymes are used over and over again by the body until completely utilized. Because they are the kick-starters for the chemical reactions involved in breathing, growth, reproduction, blood coagulation, regenerating, healing, combating disease, and every action and reaction that goes on in our bodies, it is vitally important for us to also take Avena N-Zymes on an empty stomach in between meals. You might say that if your body was a construction site, N-Zymes would be the Prime Contractors, ensuring that the ‘workers’ (friendly bacteria) and the building materials (vitamins, minerals, amino acids) are utilized in order for the job to be completed. One of the first, or most obvious signs of an enzyme deficiency is poor or disturbed digestion, including excess gas, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea and constipation, premature skin wrinkles, joint stiffness, gray hair, or a decrease in or a general lack of energy—these should not be accepted as ‘signs of aging’ as we are often lead to believe! Avena’s GASTRIC N-Zymes are multiple plant-based cultured Enzymes minus the protease, providing high potency enzymes and herbals to assist our bodies in healing gastric conditions, or sensitive stomachs as a preparation towards being able to utilize Avena’s full spectrum multi N-Zymes. Gastric N-Zymes are intended to be taken with meals to replace naturally occurring enzymes lost during processing and cooking.
Consider Enzyme Therapy with Avena’s Individual Cultured Enzymes:

Amylase is excellent for ingestion between meals when amylase deficiencies may be detected. Amylase enzymes break down carbohydrates (such as grains, bread, potatoes, noodles, pasta), and may be beneficial in cases of asthma, hay fever, air-borne allergies, joint immobility, insect bites, & poison oak/ivy, skin eruptions, acne, rashes, histamine
reactions, mood swings, PMS, depression, fatigue, hot flashes, writer’s cramps, neck and shoulder aches, and sinusconditions. Amylase will also help ease muscle soreness and pain following exercise.

Protease is intended for ingestion between meals when protein deficiencies may be detected. Protease digests protein (such as meats, fish, eggs) breaking it down into smaller units called amino acids. Not only protein from food, but also organisms composed of protein such as the protective coating on certain viruses or tumours, and toxins from
dead bacteria, etc, found at any sites of injury or inflammation. Protease may be beneficial in cases of infection, fever, lowered immune response, hypoglycemia, PMS, osteoporosis, candida, high blood pressure, constipation, insomnia, hearing loss, gingivitis, colds/flu’s, back problems, and acute traumatic injuries. Protease helps purify the blood.

Lipase is excellent for ingestion between meals to break down lipids and neutral fats (triglycerides) into glycerol and fatty acids. Lipase is important for cell permeability. Before Lipase can digest fat, bile (an emulsifier or degreaser) must break down the fat into smaller units. People who are low in HCl cannot make adequate bile for this complete
process. As these are inter-related, lipase and protease deficiencies also contribute to low HCl. Lipase is beneficial in chronic inflammatory conditions, lymphatic swelling, joint pain with swelling, or acne. Excellent results are experienced when used in weight management programs. Lipase deficiencies may show up as psoriasis, gallstones, cystitis (bladder infection), heart problems, incontinence, diarrhea, etc.Faulty fat digestion in the digestive tract because of poor lipase activity is often a factor in cardiovascular diseases, such as the cholesterol that is similar to fat which can clog arteries. The fat in animal and fowl tissue contains lipase, as do some plants such as avocados and coconuts. However modern butter, for example, lacks the lipase of unpasteurized butter. In fact, fat in human obesity and in fatty tumors contain less lipase than does normal fatty
tissue! When fats are eaten along with their associated enzymes the arteries and heart do not suffer.

Cellulase increases intestinal absorption of nutrients and is intended for ingestion between meals. It digests soluble fiber that is eventually converted to glucose. It is the only enzyme that our bodies cannot produce, therefore it must be obtained from food sources (all raw fruits, veggies, whole grains), or from plant-based enzyme supplements. It may be beneficial in cases of food allergies, toxicity, chemical blockage, mental fog, metal taste in mouth, liver swelling/pain, drug withdrawal, inability to digest raw foods and nuts, a yeast overgrowth from sugar intolerance (helps digest yeast-fungi), and pain syndromes. Cellulase helps to digest certain neurotoxins in the colon that would cause facial pain or facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy). Cellulase transports nutrients into our cells while transporting toxins (including heavy metals) out of our cells. According to the Surgeon General’s report on nutrition and health, 8 out of 10 leading causes of death in the USA are diet related! This fact points to the ‘average’ diet as the reason for our high rate of degenerative diseases. Wild animals are incapable of ‘firing’ foods (cooking is the biggest difference between their food and ours), and they are virtually free of diseases such as Cancer, AIDS, Diabetes, etc. However, when kept in captivity and fed a diet of ‘fired’, preserved foods, they surprisingly develop the same disease conditions as humans! Realizing this gives us the knowledge to reverse our dis-ease conditions by improving our daily dietary habits. So, let’s look at the differences between ‘fired-foods’ and living raw foods. Upon cooking, proteins, fats, and fibre,
though still present are seriously altered. Some vitamins and minerals may be replaced by fortification duringprocessing stages. But what about the naturally-occurring enzyme factors naturally found in all foods before cooking, processing, or preservation? Research has proven that heating at temperatures above 118 degrees destroys virtually all
naturally-occurring enzymes in food! And as society continues to suffer the effects of an enzyme-deficient diet, wesee it is too costly to our health and quality of life to ignore the negative effects of ‘dead’ food.

Enzymes power all physical movement, regulate organ function, generate the immune system, and help to digest our food. Even thinking and breathing depend on enzymes! Without the required enzymes in our food to sustain dietary integrity, our body is forced to continually sacrifice its “enzyme bank”. Continual robbing of our metabolic enzymes for digestion purposes sacrifices the integrity of our immune system–. This is clearly shown by our high rate of immune-related diseases (Dr. Kutchacoff, “The Effects of Food Cooking on the Blood Formulas of Man”). Without proper assimilation and utilization of nutrients in the gastric stomach area, the result is poorly digested, or worse, undigested foods moving into the colon, putrefying while creating extremely toxic by-products on the long trip to excretion. Life-giving enzymes within food (or introduced as a supplement at the beginning of your meal) have the ability to begin, and even complete the digestion of food adequately—well before the body would be required to draw upon its own bank of enzymes. However, in the absence of enzymes, any remaining undigested material bypasses the uptake sites (villi) in our small intestines, collecting in the colon. Enzymes called from the pancreas by the pituitary gland are soon exhausted, leaving undigested foods to bacterial toxic breakdown and putrefaction—producing toxic byproducts! These toxic by-products are then re-absorbed by the body, creating an even greater strain on an already overtaxed system (referred to as intestinal toxemia, which is associated with aging, degeneration and disease). Our livers, when working well, remove many of these harmful toxins, only to empty them directly back into the intestine! Toxins not handled by the liver get released for general circulation throughout the body.
Proteins are the building blocks for the body and are necessary for the transport of vitamins and minerals to the bloodstream, and are required in order for the body to make hormones and enzymes. A weakened pancreas fails to deliver the necessary proteins to the needed areas, contributing to degeneration. Without utilizable forms of protein, our bodies must use raw materials from our inner sources (catabolism) in order to function. An extensive study by Dr. Henry Pottenger revealed that ‘enzyme potential’ is passed in genetic structure from one generation to the next. Groups of cats fed only raw enzyme-rich foods passed their abilities for high potential levels of enzymes to their younger generations. While groups fed only cooked enzyme-void foods rapidly deteriorated and passed their deterioration into the genetic structure of their offspring. Quite clearly, adequate levels of enzymes are
essential in order for our bodies to utilize proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Enzymes truly are the KEY to life!

Assist your body by eating more fresh, raw and living foods, preferably in season and hopefully grown locally; buying foods with a “fresh” smell (as in tomatoes); trying to buy rganically grown foods, buying the “whole” fruit or vegetable instead of cut food where enzymatic changes have been initiated. When cutting your food at home for serving, slice it on a slant or angle to help preserve its electrical viability. Supplement your meals with Avena’s multi N-Zymes. Consider enzyme therapy using Avena’s Individual Cultured Enzymes in between meals on an empty stomach along with multi N-Zymes when the need is indicated.

For vibrant health—Avena’s full-spectrum Cultured Enzymes—active in acid or alkaline conditions!

Focus on a Healing Diet

Focus on a Healing Diet

Every time you eat you can do something good for your health. You can always use your food as medicine. The food we eat changes our weight, mood and our outlook on life. The old saying still rings true.. We literally are what we eat. And eating is one thing we have control over every day for our health. Here are three (3) important tips to help you get started:

Promise yourself whole foods for your healing diet. Whole foods keep you whole. Today, we live in a man-made jungle of food substances instead of foods – many of them highly processed, devoid of nutrients, chemical-laced, sugar-drenched and full of hidden fat. Eat whole grains rather flour products; focus on fresh organic fruits and vegetables for healing enzymes and nutrients. Eating out of a box or eating lots of chemically treated, microwaved foods on a regular basis doesn’t give your body what it needs. These foods only add to the toxic burden already on your body.

Go organic. Organically grown foods are popular and easily available today. Organic food sales totaled $2.4 billion in 1995 and the market is growing 25% each year. Soils that aren’t treated with synthetic chemicals grow healthier plants that taste better and contain more nutrients. Organic food almost certainly helps protect you from cancer. We’ve known this since the 80’s. A 1987 study by the National Academy of Sciences showed that pesticides on commercial product probably cause up to 1.4 million cancer cases in Americans. Sadly, our children are affected first. The average U.S. child receives 4 times more exposure than an adult to cancer-causing pesticides in food!

Eat with the seasons you live in. If you look closely, you’ll find that Nature provides what is needed for each part of the year-fruits in the summer for cooling, and root vegetables in the winter for building, Eating fruits and vegetables as they are harvested in your own area is a wonderful way to keep a closer touch with where you are and who you are.

Get Back To Nature With Whole Foods

You aren’t going to find anything natural about Parma-foods, or any type of refined processed foods that have been fortified with nutrients. These nutrients are only a small portion of the whole food – and will never do for you what these wonderful whole foods that are full of nutraceuticals can do. When we eat foods that are locally grown or from our own garden, not only will we have better health and more energy – this way of living does wonders for harmony of mind and body – a step toward keeping the balance around us right and reminding us that we are all part of the natural chain.
